Your lungs are essential to your health, bringing oxygen to your blood and getting rid of unnecessary carbon dioxide. When you can't breathe well due to a disease or condition, it can greatly impact your health and quality of life. You may feel more tired, be unable to participate in your usual activities or have trouble concentrating.
Main Line Health expert pulmonologists (doctors specially trained to care for your lungs) are dedicated to helping you breathe better and improving your quality of life. In locations throughout the Philadelphia region our board-certified pulmonologists treat and manage many pulmonary diseases that affect your ability to breathe, including:
- Asthma
- Chronic bronchitis
- Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD)
- Cystic fibrosis
- Emphysema
- Lung cancer
- Pneumonia
- Pulmonary fibrosis
At Main Line Health, we offer comprehensive pulmonary disease care, including diagnostic testing, respiratory care and pulmonary rehabilitation. Most people can receive these services from a pulmonary diseases practice outside the hospital. For people with severe pulmonary diseases, we offer advanced care inside Main Line Health hospitals at convenient locations in the Philadelphia suburbs.
Critical care offers advanced respiratory support
Inside the hospital, many of our pulmonologists serve as critical care physicians in intensive care units (ICUs). Many people within the intensive care unit need special help with breathing because they have very serious conditions like pneumonia or have gone into respiratory failure.
Our pulmonologists offer advanced respiratory support through supplemental oxygen, continuous airway pressure machines (CPAP) or mechanical ventilation. We strive to help the body heal and ensure that it has enough oxygen to work. We continue to work with patients after they have left the hospital to improve their lung health and lessen their chance of returning to the hospital.
