Breast cancer awareness

Breast cancer is the most common cancer among women, but it's also one of the most treatable when detected early. In fact, the five-year survival rate for breast cancer that hasn't spread to other parts of the body is 99%.

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, a time to learn about early detection and raise awareness about breast cancer. No matter your age, it's crucial to understand the risk factors and to know what you can do to lower your risk.

Education, prevention and screenings

Educating ourselves about breast cancer, knowing the risk factors and taking steps to prevent it is an important part of your overall healthcare.

To lessen your risk of breast cancer, remember to eat healthy, exercise regularly, avoid tobacco and too much alcohol, and keep up with routine health screenings.

The American Cancer Society recommends that women ages 45 to 54 get a mammogram every year. Women 55 and older should talk to their doctor to about continuing with an annual mammogram or if they can reduce the frequency to every two years.

If you have a family history of breast cancer or other risk factors, your doctor may suggest earlier screenings. They might also recommend more frequent check-ups. Per recent FDA recommendation, your doctor will notify you if you have dense breast and advise on any additional screenings that may be necessary.

Routine breast cancer screenings are crucial in detecting breast cancer early, before symptoms appear. A mammogram is the best way to find breast cancer early. It can detect lumps or issues before you or your doctor can feel them.
