Childbirth education classes are offered to clients delivering their baby at a Main Line Health hospital: Lankenau Medical Center, Bryn Mawr, Paoli and Riddle hospitals. Registration fees for Main Line Health maternity education programs may be eligible for reimbursement from your insurance plan. Please check you plan benefits for more information.

Maternity unit tours

  • Offered at Lankenau Medical Center, Bryn Mawr, Paoli and Riddle hospitals

This is a free tour of the labor and delivery area, postpartum unit and newborn nursery with opportunity for Q&A with a staff member. This tour should be scheduled around your 28th week. Registration is required; children are not permitted on the tour. Please note: Both the one-day and three-week series prepared childbirth classes offer this tour as part of the class session.

One-day prepared childbirth class

  • Offered at Lankenau Medical Center, Bryn Mawr, Paoli and Riddle hospitals
  • Plan to attend this class in or around your seventh month of pregnancy

This class focuses on both the physical and emotional aspects of labor and delivery, with emphasis on breathing and relaxation techniques. The instructor will discuss: the natural progression of labor and delivery; coping strategies for labor, including medication and anesthesia options; the role of support person; and the possibility of cesarean birth. This class is offered to those expecting their first baby or those who have never attended childbirth classes.

Note: a tour of the maternity unit will be provided as part of this class at Bryn Mawr, Paoli and Riddle hospitals; children are not permitted to class or the tour. At Lankenau Medical Center, the one day class does NOT include a tour of the maternity unit.

Please bring snacks, drinks, a small pillow (if you would like to have it for comfort), and wear comfortable clothing. Class registration is for two participants.

Two-week accelerated prepared childbirth series

This is an accelerated version of the one-day prepared childbirth class hosted over two class sessions. While the two-week accelerated series offers much of same material as the one-day class, it is conducted in a more accelerated, condensed manner. It is ideal for families with limited time and for those interested in preparing for labor and birth both in the classroom setting and by independent study. This class offering is also appropriate for moms looking for a childbirth refresher. This class offering does NOT include a tour of the maternity units.

Please dress comfortably and feel free to bring a snack and beverage if you wish. Class registration is for two participants.

Prepared childbirth class – three-week series program

This three-week class is offered to those expecting their first baby or those who have never attended childbirth classes.

Advanced comfort measures

  • Offered at Lankenau Medical Center, Bryn Mawr and Paoli hospitals
  • Plan on attending this class two to three months before your baby is due and after completing your prepared childbirth class

This interactive one-session class will be discussing comfort measures, beyond breathing and relaxation that are taught during prepared childbirth classes. Topics to be discussed and practiced will include birth balls, massage and pressure points, hot and cold therapies, and additional positions and non-medical techniques for comfort and aiding in the progression of labor and birth.

Participants are encouraged to dress comfortably and bring two pillows, birth ball, yoga mat and a towel to class.

This class is in addition to the basics taught during prepared childbirth classes. Completion at a traditional prepared childbirth series or one-day class, or having given birth within the last five years is a pre-requisite to attending this class.

Prenatal breastfeeding

  • Offered at Lankenau Medical Center, Bryn Mawr, Paoli and Riddle hospitals
  • Plan to attend two to three months before your baby is due

During this program you will learn breastfeeding techniques to get you off to a good start, steps for successful breastfeeding, and information for coping with common situations or problems that can occur in the early weeks. The father of the baby or a supportive family member is encouraged to attend.

Please bring a life-size doll or stuffed animal so that you can practice positioning techniques as they are demonstrated during class. Class registration is for two participants.

Happiest baby

  • Offered at Lankenau Medical Center, Bryn Mawr and Paoli hospitals
  • Plan to attend this class two to three months before you are due or up to eight weeks after you deliver

Based on the bestselling parenting book and DVD The Happiest Baby on the Block by pediatrician Dr. Harvey Karp, this class provides participants with the necessary tools to calm a crying baby. Long periods of crying are associated with postpartum depression, breastfeeding failure and stress in relationships. Come learn about and practice the five S’s to soothe crying so your baby—and you—can sleep longer.

Attendees receive The Happiest Baby DVD, soothing sounds CD, swaddling blanket and tip sheets to make your baby the happiest baby on the block! Babies up to age 8 weeks are welcome to come with parents. Class registration is for two participants.

Keeping baby safe

  • Offered at Bryn Mawr and Paoli hospitals
  • Plan to attend two to three months before your baby is due

Keeping your growing baby safe goes way beyond baby proofing your home. This class focuses on safety factors of baby products, safe sleep environments, car safety, poison prevention, choking, environmental factors and American Academy of Pediatrics recommendations for a healthy, safe environment for your growing baby. An ounce of prevention can go a long way towards keeping your little one safe. This class is a must for everyone caring for an infant or toddler! Bring your safety questions and a print out of your baby registry for discussion. Class registration is for two participants.

Sibling preparation

  • Offered at Lankenau Medical Center, Paoli and Riddle hospitals
  • Plan to attend one to two months before your baby is due

Join us for stories, actives and fun in sibling class! This class is designed to help your child(ren) learn about the important job of becoming a big brother or sister. All children must be accompanied by an adult. This class is designed for children 3–7 years of age. A quick tour of the maternity unit will be provided.

Welcoming baby

  • Offered at Lankenau Medical Center and Paoli Hospital
  • Plan to attend two to three months before your baby is due

This one-session class helps the expectant parents and grandparents prepare for the new baby’s arrival. A pediatrician (when available) and/or an RN childbirth educator will speak on such topics as selecting a pediatrician, the normal newborn immunizations, caring for your newborn, readying your home for your baby, and when to call the pediatrician. You’ll learn helpful hints about understanding your newborn and gain important information about car seats, infant safety, safe sleep practices, poison prevention, choosing baby furniture and much more. Participants will leave class with printed resources for future reference. This is NOT a CPR class. Infant CPR classes are offered by the American Red Cross.

Please note that this is not an infant care class, as demonstrations on bathing and diapering will be offered during your hospital stay.

Class registration is for two participants. Grandparents are welcome to attend and will require separate (discounted) registration.
