As one of the most extensive programs at Bryn Mawr Rehab Hospital, our primary focus is to help patients build strength, mobility and endurance for a variety of orthopedic conditions, including:
- Joint replacements
- Sports injuries
Orthopedic therapy: Our approach
Patients admitted to Bryn Mawr Rehab Hospital undergo three hours of intensive therapy a minimum of five out of seven days a week. Following our uniquely creative approach, each patient at Bryn Mawr Rehab Hospital participates in a customized treatment regimen. These therapies can include higher intensity physical and occupational therapy, speech pathology, psychology, cognitive retraining, recreational therapy and other services, depending on each patient’s individual needs. Our dedicated team develops creative, individualized exercises that motivate therapeutic work, especially in the face of frustration. Initial goals include:
- Improving mobility with gait and transfer training
- Easing daily activities with prescribed adaptive aids
- Alleviating pain through medical management and therapy
Our inpatient orthopedic therapy program treats nearly 1,000 patients between the ages of 18–97 each year. Patients stay on site from five to 14 days with an average stay of nine days. 86 percent of our inpatients are able to return home after discharge and 98 percent say they would definitely recommend Bryn Mawr Rehab Hospital to others.
A typical orthopedic rehab session will start with pain reduction before increasing range of motion, strength, mobility, coordination and endurance. In addition to traditional physical and occupational therapy, our team offers creative treatment options like horticulture therapy and pet therapy to help patients make progress toward their therapy goals.
Patients are encouraged to continue the healing process with one of our comprehensive outpatient programs.
Our orthopedic rehabilitation is always customized to the goals and interests that best motivate our patients. Outpatient services may include:
- Adapted driving program
- Aquatic therapy
- Assistive technology services
- Neuropsychological evaluations
- Pain management
- RehabWorks for work-related injuries
Orthopedic services are available at any of our outpatient locations throughout Philadelphia’s western suburbs.
Potentially immobilizing conditions like joint replacement and severe fractures can require a great commitment from family members. Throughout inpatient rehab, our team provides patients and their families with an expansive education on fall prevention and home safety, adaptive equipment use, pain management and training to assist with mobility and activities of daily living, as appropriate. We encourage and support patient and family education whenever possible to ease the transition to an active lifestyle after hospitalization. To keep families involved during inpatient rehab, Bryn Mawr Rehab Hospital offers on-site guest accommodations for family members who do not live locally.
