Welcome paramedic students and instructors!
These pages have been created to enhance the orientation experience to Lankenau Medical Center, Bryn Mawr Hospital, Paoli Hospital, Riddle Hospital and Bryn Mawr Rehabilitation Hospital.
Through our Clinical Internship, Paramedic students are able to apply knowledge obtained in the classroom and skills labs. They begin to learn how to apply the cognitive knowledge and skills they developed in the skills laboratory and hospital environment to practical field application. Patient care provided by students is strictly limited to specific written objectives for the student's current level of education and standard medical procedures for the level of training, education and current credentials of the student. At no time can the student exceed their scope of practice. Whenever possible, the student should gain experience by direct patient contact. Experience may also be gained through direct observation if hands-on patient care is not possible. Patient care provided by the student must be with patient consent and in conjunction with direct supervision of clinical instructor or preceptor in accordance with hospital's requirements.
The practicum provides educational experiences to assist students in developing the EMT/Paramedic roles beyond what is possible during traditional clinical experiences. The experience provides the student opportunity to:
- Translate theory into practice through a collaborative relationship with an experienced paramedic.
- Develop effective clinical judgment based on interactions with a professional who demonstrates successful EMS practice.
- Increase competence and confidence under the guidance of an experienced paramedic.
- Benefit from the relationship between EMS education and EMS practice.
- Attain skills necessary to begin competent, safe, and ethical practice as an EMT / Paramedic graduate.
As the paramedic student progresses from observer to participant and then to team leader during the end of their field internship, the student will have been given the tools for advancement to the level of entry-level paramedic.
