Well Ahead Philly
National Recovery Month
September is National Recovery Month — a time to learn about substance use treatment and mental help services. It’s also a time to encourage those who need help to ask for it.
Whether you're recovering from drugs, alcohol or any other substance, or have a family member who you would like to help, know that you're not alone and that there are resources available to support you on your journey towards recovery.
What is substance use disorder?
Substance use disorder is a chronic disease characterized by the persistent use of substances despite negative consequences. It can range from mild to severe and can involve a wide variety of substances, including alcohol, tobacco, prescription medications and illegal drugs.
The signs of substance use disorder can include:
- Physical and behavioral changes, such as decreased interest in activities
- Withdrawal from social circles
- Neglect of responsibilities
- Changes in appetite and sleep patterns
It's important to understand that substance use disorder is a medical condition, not a personal failure. The good news is that there are effective treatments available, such as cognitive behavioral therapy, that can help people overcome addiction and regain their lives.
Cognitive behavioral therapy
Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), often used to treat substance use disorder and mental illness, is a highly effective therapy that focuses on changing the patterns of negative thoughts and behavior. This therapy technique empowers individuals to identify and understand their thinking patterns that are responsible for the psychological problems they experience.
Cognitive behavioral therapy is designed to help individuals achieve lasting results that lead to an overall improvement in their mental well-being. CBT is backed by scientific research, and many individuals have experienced significant improvements in their mental health through this approach.
