Lymphedema Management Program

What is lymphedema management?

Lymphedema is a condition of fluid stagnation and tissue swelling that often shows up in the arms, legs, torso, head or neck. It occurs when there has been direct damage to the lymphatic system—which helps rid the body of toxins and fluids—or an obstruction of normal lymphatic flow. People most at risk of developing lymphedema include those undergoing cancer surgery with lymph node removal or who are receiving radiation treatments.

At Bryn Mawr Rehab, our specially certified lymphedema therapists treat patients of all ages at outpatient locations throughout the suburbs of Philadelphia.

Our lymphedema therapists are able to help you achieve best results early and with continued treatment. Even in cases of chronic lymphedema, an active management program can reduce swelling and improve symptoms. Our creative therapies include:

  • Manual lymphatic drainage or massage
  • Multi-layer compression bandaging
  • Compression garments
  • Exercise
  • Skin care

Long-term treatment for lymphedema varies depending on the severity and complexity of your condition. Most cases can be treated with a regimented, daily routine, occasionally with the supplement of other therapeutic interventions.
