It occurs when there has been direct damage to the lymphatic system—which helps rid the body of toxins and fluids—or an obstruction of normal lymphatic flow. People most at risk of developing lymphedema include those undergoing cancer surgery with lymph node removal or who are receiving radiation treatments.
