Uterine cancer risk factors and symptoms
Some symptoms include irregular vaginal bleeding, pelvic pain during urination and pelvic pain during intercourse. These symptoms can sometimes be confused with the symptoms of menopause, so it’s important to check with your doctor. There is no screening test to determine if you might have uterine cancer, therefore it is important to talk to your doctor about any symptoms of unusual vaginal bleeding you may have.
Some health conditions increase your risk for developing uterine cancer. These include:
- Diabetes
- High blood pressure
- Obesity
Using estrogen replacement during menopause that does not include progesterone or Tamoxifen may also increase your risk.
Who is at risk for uterine cancer?
While the exact cause of uterine cancer is unknown, cells in the uterine walls (myometrium) or uterine lining (endometrium) can mutate and form tumors.
You may be at increased risk for developing uterine cancer if you:
- Are age 50 or older
- Eat a diet high in animal fats
- Have family hustory of colon cancer, diabetes and/or ovarian tumors
- Have a family history of gynecologic cancer
- Began menstruating before age 12
- Began menopause after age 50
- Have had estrogen replacement therapy
- Have never been pregnant
