The menopausal transition is a unique and individual experience for every woman. As the body adjusts to hormonal changes, women may notice changes in energy levels and weight gain. But if you take care of your health, you can thrive throughout your 50s (and beyond).

It's important for women in the peri- or post-menopausal stage to continue regular visits with their gynecologist for preventive care. These visits are especially important for cancer screenings, as early detection is crucial for successful treatment. Regular pelvic exams, Pap smears and mammograms are recommended.

It's just as important to be aware of other potential effects of hormonal changes, such as skin changes and sleep disturbances. Additionally, there's an increased risk of high blood pressure, heart disease and mental health issues like anxiety and depression. By taking a proactive approach to preventive care, women can effectively manage and navigate the menopausal transition.

Dr. Patricia N. Ischiropoulos, a gynecologist at Main Line Health, talks about what women can do to take care of their health through peri- and post-menopause.
