Well Ahead Philly

April 2023

The weather is starting to warm up, and that means most of us will be spending more time outdoors. Whether you're chasing your grandkids around the backyard or getting back into your workout routine, it's important to do so safely.

Tips to avoid injury

Sometimes all you need to convince you to work out is a sunny day. So, while we might be ready to hit the ground running when the weather finally turns warm, our bodies aren't ready to keep up quite yet. Instead of jumping right into an activity, try easing back in with slower or shorter workouts. And don't forget to weave in some rest days, too.

Here are some tips to avoid injury when you get back to exercising:

  • Warm up and warm down: Stretching and light movement before and after a workout can help you avoid injuries, like pulled muscles and sprains or even fractures.
  • Don't be a weekend warrior: If you don't work out as much as you'd like during the week, don't cram everything in on the weekends. Instead, try to work more movement in through your days during the week. Set a timer to get up and walk or stretch every hour, or take 10 minute breaks for some bodyweight exercises.
  • Pace yourself and stay hydrated: Make sure you aren't pushing yourself too hard—listen to your body and take breaks when you need them. Also, make sure you're drinking enough water throughout your workouts. Both will further help you to avoid injuring yourself.

Remember, pain doesn't equal gain. When pain does happen, it could be something more serious than just post-workout soreness. So be sure to seek treatment when you suspect you've been injured. And always consult with your health care provider before starting a new workout routine.
