Bryn Mawr, PALankenau Medical Center, Riddle Hospital and Paoli Hospital, part of Main Line Health, are ranked among the nation’s top hospitals for clinical quality in 2023.

Lankenau achieved its fourth straight year as a recipient of the America’s 50 Best Hospitals AwardTM, placing it among the nation’s top 1% of medical centers. It is the only hospital in the Philadelphia region with the distinction.

Riddle was a repeat honoree with its America’s 100 Best Hospitals AwardTM, ranking it in the top 2% nationally. Paoli received its first America’s 250 Best Hospitals AwardTM, putting it among the top 5% of U.S. hospitals as ranked by Healthgrades, an online platform dedicated to helping people with health care choices.

“This recognition by Healthgrades is a true source of pride for Main Line Health,” said Jack Lynch, FACHE, President and CEO. “Our patients deserve the finest care possible, and these awards show we are delivering. My gratitude goes out to our physicians, nurses, and all the other members of our team who made these awards possible. Everyone on our team deserves credit.”

Lankenau took top honors for the fourth straight year for its cardiac care, ranking among America’s top 50 for cardiac surgery and top 100 for cardiac care. Its cardiac surgery honors were accompanied by a State Ranking Award. These awards point to superior performance in heart bypass and valve surgery as well as coronary interventional procedures and treatment for heart attack and heart failure. Lankenau also was honored for the second year in a row for pulmonary care excellence.

Riddle not only was in the top 100 nationally overall but for best critical care. It was the third straight year for critical care recognition.

Paoli’s entry into the top 250 was marked by its second pulmonary care award in the last three years.

Healthgrades analyzed the most recent three years of data available on medical outcomes (2019–2021) to determine its top 250 hospitals. The rankings are based on Medicare medical claims for 4,500 hospitals nationwide in 31 specialties.

“Healthcare decisions are often complicated and fraught with emotion,” said Brad Bowman, MD, Chief Medical Officer and Head of Data Science at Healthgrades. “By giving consumers an easy-to-understand, data-driven way to identify the hospitals in their area with the best outcomes, Healthgrades is helping all patients—no matter their background—confidently choose higher quality care.”

If all hospitals performed similarly to those in the top 250 (representing the nation’s top 5%), 160,000 lives potentially could have been saved, according to the organization.
