The Gastric Sleeve / Laparoscopic Sleeve Gastrectomy

It can be difficult to lose weight, but you don’t have to do it alone. If you want to permanently lose 60 pounds or more, a sleeve gastrectomy (gastric sleeve) may be the best next step on your journey to a healthier weight.

About minimally invasive sleeve gastrectomy

At Main Line Health we serve patients with comprehensive surgical weight loss solutions, including the sleeve gastrectomy and all other approved weight loss surgery procedures currently available in the U.S. that have proven effective in helping people maintain long-term healthy weight loss and maintenance.

While everyone’s weight loss journey is unique, you may be a good candidate for gastric sleeve if:

  • You're 100 or more pounds over a healthy body weight
  • You have a history of complex surgeries
  • You have obesity-related medical conditions

You and your provider will work together to determine the best weight loss plan for you and your lifestyle. Join us for one of our upcoming bariatric surgery information sessions or watch our information video to learn more about your treatment options.

How does minimally invasive sleeve gastrectomy work?

During a sleeve gastrectomy, approximately 75% of your stomach is surgically removed, leaving you with a smaller “banana-shaped” stomach that limits food intake and hormonally reduces hunger, increasing fullness. This is a permanent procedure that does not require any future adjustments. This procedure works long term by rebalancing the hormones in our body that create fullness to reduce hunger even after years of significant weight loss.

The gastric sleeve procedure is recognized as one of the safest weight loss surgeries since it doesn't involve bypassing the small intestines, allowing for normal food digestion and nutrient absorption. It carries lower complication risks, without leaving any foreign objects inside the body. Since it is the first step in the duodenal switch, it easily allows any future revision to be done safely. Nevertheless, as with any surgical procedure, some risks will be discussed by your bariatric surgeon.

You may want to know more about the benefits of gastric sleeve and how to qualify for gastric sleeve surgery.
