Caring for your health, from head to toe

Sometimes your regular family doctor may refer you to an internal medicine physician. An internal medicine physician works with your family doctor to provide comprehensive medical care.

Internal medicine physicians have extensive training to care for you when you have illnesses or problems that are:

  • Rare
  • Chronic (ongoing)
  • Complex (caused by multiple factors)
  • Co-occurring (multiple health problems at the same time)

Internal medicine includes prevention and treatment of conditions that affect your entire body—inside and out. At Main Line Health locations throughout the Philadelphia region we offer internal medicine services to address the needs of every patient in our care, including LGBTQ patients and families.

Inpatient and outpatient internal medicine services

Many times, an internal medicine physician is someone you see when you are staying in the hospital. Our internal medicine physicians coordinate your care during your hospital stay and keep your family doctor up-to-date on your treatment and condition. They also work together with specialists in other fields to deliver a plan of care that meets your specific needs.

In addition to caring for your immediate medical needs, our internal medicine physicians are available to provide education and prevention strategies for your illness. These strategies help manage your long-term conditions and may help keep you from having to be readmitted to the hospital in the future.

Outside the hospital, our internal medicine physicians provide routine health screenings, as well as diagnosis and care for common illnesses and chronic conditions, such as diabetes and high blood pressure.
