Message from the program director

Dear Applicants and Future Colleagues,

Welcome, and thank you for considering our Psychiatry Residency Program!

Choosing a residency is an exciting and deeply personal decision. At our program, we offer not only a rigorous and well-rounded clinical education, but a supportive, inclusive environment where you will be challenged to grow into the best version of yourself — both professionally and personally.

What makes our program truly stand out is the breadth and quality of the experiences we offer. We are proud to have a renowned Women’s Peripartum Mental Health Program, providing residents with specialized training in the diagnosis and treatment of psychiatric conditions during pregnancy and postpartum. This unique opportunity allows you to work alongside experts in a rapidly growing and critically important field of psychiatry.

You will also train in our state-of-the-art psychiatric unit, designed with both patient care and learner experience in mind. With modern facilities and a multidisciplinary approach to treatment, this unit offers an ideal setting for immersive, hands-on learning. Our excellent staffing ratios ensure that you are well-supported in your clinical work, allowing you to focus on providing thoughtful, high-quality care while also protecting your time for learning and wellness.

As Program Director, I am continually inspired by our residents — their compassion, resilience, and commitment to growth. They are the heart of our program, and we take pride in fostering a culture of mentorship, collaboration, and mutual respect.

We are excited to share our program with you and cannot wait to meet the next generation of psychiatry leaders. This is more than just a training program — it is a community. And we hope you will become a part of it.

Warmly,

Brittni Jones, DO

Dear Future Psychiatrists:

Welcome to Main Line Health Psychiatry and congratulations on choosing an exciting and meaningful career path. Psychiatry is a deeply rewarding specialty, and I hope we can support you in discovering all that this field has to offer. In my time as System Vice Chairman, I’ve come to appreciate our dedicated team of psychiatrists, psychologists, and mental health professionals, as well as a health system that is deeply committed to the well-being of our patients, trainees, staff, and communities. I believe these are two of the most important ingredients for a robust and consequential training program.

With the growing number of people engaging with mental health treatment and the reduction in stigma associated with these conditions, psychiatry is seeing a tremendous evolution in recognition and stature. Furthermore, advances in biological, psychological, and social interventions — along with a growing recognition of ecological and spiritual influences — have amplified psychiatry’s public health impact. What excites me most is how innovations such as precision psychiatry, neuromodulation, scale-informed care, digital tools and AI, integrated models, and improved treatment for severe mental illness are transforming our practice in real time. The future of psychiatry is bright, and there are a variety of rewarding and fascinating career opportunities in front of you.

Main Line Health is an exceptional place to train as a psychiatrist in part because of the breadth of services the system offers. This allows us to train clinicians who are well-prepared to practice in a wide range of settings — whether hospital-based, partial hospital, intensive outpatient, traditional outpatient, community-based, or integrated behavioral health environments. We are committed to clinical excellence and collaborative care models as well as specialized services such as the Women’s Emotional Wellness Center, the Mirmont Treatment Center and our neuromodulation services. Ultimately, our faculty are the driving force behind the program, consistently demonstrating their dedication to both patient care and trainee education.

I joined the Main Line Health faculty in May 2025 to help shape the next chapter of the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Health. I am looking forward to building on our strong foundation of hospital-based services and expansive outpatient practices. If you’re seeking a training environment that is engaging, culturally diverse, supportive, and deeply rooted in both hospital and community care, I believe you’ll find what you’re looking for here. I encourage you to take the next step and get to know us better. I hope we get the chance to know you better at a virtual interview in the near future.

Sincerely,

Richard Hempel, MD, MA
