Colon and Rectal Surgery

My approach to patient care is the same with every patient, regardless of the nature of their problem. I spend as much time as needed to get to know the patient, understand their problem, and tailor a care plan to address their concern. That office visit may take 5 minutes or it could take 45 if someone has a complex problem, requires a translator, or is hard of hearing. The visit also may lead to a discussion of things a patient can do without my help, such as adjust their diet to help shrink their hemorrhoids. Patients often remark that I am unique in treating them like a human being. As a doctor, I cannot imagine treating patients any other way.

Dr. Parikh is a Main Line Health surgeon with dual certification in general surgery and colon and rectal surgery. He sees patients at Riddle Hospital, where he has practiced since 2002. After more than 20 years performing complex abdominal surgery in the hospital, Dr. Parikh turned his focus to the care of patients with diseases and disorders of the colon, rectum, and anus that can be treated in an outpatient setting. This includes conditions that need surgical treatment but do not require an overnight stay in the hospital. When surgery is needed, for example to remove an early-stage rectal cancer, Dr. Parikh can offer minimally invasive approaches, such as transanal excision. Another important aspect of Dr. Parikh’s practice involves the use of colonoscopy to screen for, diagnose, and in some cases treat problems in the colon or rectum. In addition to screening for cancer, colonoscopy is used to evaluate and help diagnose bleeding within the gastrointestinal (GI) tract, blood in the stool, unexplained changes in bowel habits, rectal pain or bleeding, iron-deficiency anemia, unexplained weight loss, persistent abdominal or pelvic pain, and abnormalities in the colon or rectum that are seen on imaging done for other reasons.
