Hematology and Blood Disorders
Board certified since 2017
I believe in shared decision making with patients—meaning openly discussing and agreeing on the treatment that is best for them. This important partnership with patients is developed through communication using clear language and allowing opportunity for questions. My focus is on helping patients understand how their body normally functions, how a disease is affecting that function, and how different treatments work to improve function. I believe that if patients understand a recommended treatment plan, they are more likely to follow through with the plan.

Dr. Kumar specializes in two areas of medicine: hematology (diagnosis and treatment of blood disorders) and medical oncology (medical treatment of cancer). He is board certified in both specialties. As a hematologist, Dr. Kumar is dedicated to accurate diagnosis and effective management of disorders of the blood. Blood contains several types of cells, all of which perform functions essential to life. For example, red cells transport oxygen from the lungs to the rest of the body, white cells fight infection and other diseases, and platelets prevent and stop bleeding. Blood disorders include conditions such as anemia, abnormal or excessing bleeding, and abnormal or excessive blood clotting. Cancers also can develop in blood cells. Dr. Kumar diagnoses and treats all noncancerous and cancerous disorders of the blood. As a medical oncologist, Dr. Kumar specializes in the use of medicines to treat cancerous tumors and skin cancers. Medical treatments for cancer are advancing all the time, and Dr. Kumar is dedicated to keeping pace with these advances. He tailors each patient’s cancer treatment, using standard chemotherapy and newer targeted therapies or immunotherapy as appropriate. He has a particular interest in treating prostate cancer, esophageal cancer, stomach cancer, and pancreatic cancer. Dr. Kumar is a native of India and is fluent in Hindi. He graduated with honors from All India Institute of Medical Science, New Delhi—the top medical school in India. After earning his medical degree, he pursued clinical training in the United States, completing a residency in internal medicine and a fellowship in the combined specialties of hematology and medical oncology at University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences. Dr. Kumar has been practicing hematology and medical oncology since 2017. Prior to joining Main Line Health, he was a Penn Medicine physician.
