About the Administrative Fellowship Program

Main Line Health's Administrative Fellowship provides recent graduates the opportunity to join Main Line Health’s administrative team and gain practical, hands on experience in a suburban, community-based health system.

Over a 12-month period, the fellow will have exposure to a wide range of projects and opportunities in which they will gain exposure to areas such as corporate structure, quality, performance improvement, marketing, finance, front line operations, and high-level strategic planning. The fellow will explore various project opportunities with senior executives and leaders across the system, working with his/her preceptors in the selection of project work to align with the fellow’s goals and the organization’s needs. These projects fine tune and develop the fellow’s leadership skills, interpersonal communication and decision-making skills.

In addition to project work, the fellow will attend senior management and board meetings, which will aid in the understanding of a complex health care system. Preceptors include the chief executive officer (CEO) and Chief Operating Officer (COO) of Main Line Health.

Fellowship overview

The Administrative Fellowship Program at Main Line Health was initiated in 2007 and has had a successful history. Fellows are selected from MBA, MHA, MPH, MSN and other accredited master's degree graduate programs and given the opportunity to be mentored by a number of health care executives across the hospital system. Main Line Health maintains a commitment to the Administrative Fellowship Program, in the education and development of the future health care professionals.

Fellowship goal

To provide an educational experience in a complex community health system in various facets of health care management. Fellowship objectives include but are not limited to:

  • Providing a comprehensive view of health care administration
  • Developing and utilizing the fellow’s leadership and management skills
  • Offering the fellow hands on experience in health care administration through active involvement in system program development and day to day hospital operating activities
  • Enabling the fellow to explore various professional and management opportunities within the health care industry

Fellowship projects and activities

The following is a list of possible fellowship projects and activities. This list is not exhaustive of the fellow’s opportunities.

  • Coordination of the Administrative Fellowship application and selection processes
  • Research and feasibility analysis of new service lines
  • Participation in facility and space planning
  • Planning for strategic system initiatives
  • Attend and contribute to senior management meetings and system board meetings
  • Departmental rotations (clinical and administrative)
  • Process/system improvement projects
  • Financial/budget planning

Application information


Interested applicants must have completed a degree in:

  • Business Administration (MBA)
  • Health Administration (MHA)
  • Public Health (MPH)
  • Nursing (MSN)
  • A health or business-related field from an accredited graduate program

Candidates must also be self starters willing to work in a fast-paced, multidisciplinary, system environment.

*Candidates who will receive their master’s degree upon completion of this fellowship are eligible to apply. You must be legally eligible to work in the United States to apply.

Frequently asked questions

What are the salary and benefits?

The Main Line Health Administrative Fellowship provides a competitive salary and full benefits. In addition, the fellow will be able to attend at least one all-expenses paid trip to a professional conference.

What should I expect if I apply?

The fellowship is very competitive with as many as 100 applicants. There will be several rounds of interviews, including video and on-site interviews. Once the application deadline arrives, Main Line Health will move quickly to identify the best candidates and invite them for on-site interviews with senior executives. An offer will be made at the end of September.

What will happen when the fellowship is finished?

Main Line Health does not promise a position will be available upon completion of the fellowship. However, future system growth creates opportunities for positions and advancement.

What will my relationship be with co-preceptors?

The CEO Jack Lynch and COO Barbara Wadsworth will serve as your preceptors. They will be your primary source of mentoring and can help you navigate the Main Line Health system. You will also be spending a lot of time with all of the senior leads across the system.

How much exposure will I have to senior executives?

The fellowship will give you an in-depth look at the behind the scenes workings of a major health system. You will have access to all senior executives and will find value in choosing one or more as your mentor. Attendance at most senior executive meetings and selected board meetings is a privilege granted to the fellow.

With oversight provided by Main Line Health’s CEO and Chief Operating Officer, Administrative Fellows gain practical, hands-on experience through a variety of projects in areas such as front-line operations, quality, performance improvement, marketing, finance, and high-level strategic planning.

The administrative fellowship at Main Line Health is supported by an endowment that funds additional educational opportunities for fellows, such as those offered by the American College of Healthcare Executives.
