Child-centered medical team

The staff at Bryn Mawr Hospital’s emergency department—located just outside of Philadelphia—knows that little ones need extra special care. Our pediatric emergency team physicians are board-certified in pediatric emergency medicine. That means they have special training in the very specific needs of children that are different from those of adults. And our nurses have been recognized with Magnet status, a credential only give to hospitals whose nursing staff has demonstrated excellence in a wide array of criteria based on providing the best possible patient care.

Pediatric emergency care physicians have unique skills, training and experience to provide the best care for your child. They deal with medical emergencies that require special techniques and procedures to stabilize a child, order the proper IV fluids and recognize life-threatening symptoms. Children aren’t just smaller adult bodies. They’re physically different and they come down with diseases that adults do not. Doctors who see kids day in and day out can recognize common and rare childhood illnesses immediately.

They are also able to detect problems in children who may not be cooperative, patient or able to communicate. There are enormous differences in language and cognition between adults and children. Often a child cannot explain what is wrong, making a diagnosis of a child very different than an adult. And trained experts can recognize the difference between fear and pain.

We also have emergency care for infants, children and teens throughout Main Line Health, at our three other acute care hospitals, all of which coordinate your child’s care with the pediatric specialists at Bryn Mawr Hospital, who can arrange transport to Bryn Mawr Hospital or to Nemours Hospital if the treatment team decides that a pediatric inpatient stay is required to provide the best care for your child.
