About

Robert T. Sataloff, MD

Dr. Sataloff is a world-renowned physician specializing in the human voice, with a clinical focus on care of the professional voice. He is recognized as one of the founders of the field of voice medicine. He wrote the first modern comprehensive article on the care of singers as well as the first chapter and first book on care of the professional voice. Over his four-decade career, he has continued to be a leader in the field, contributing nearly 1000 peer-reviewed articles, 70 books, and countless book chapters. Dr. Sataloff's Philadelphia-based practice draws patients from across the country and beyond whose work requires use of their voice; from teachers, cantors, and politicians to Metropolitan Opera and A-list pop singers, actors, and radio and television personalities. He offers comprehensive voice care, including laryngeal evaluation, voice analysis, injury prevention, nonsurgical voice therapy, and surgical treatment. As a pioneering voice specialist, Dr. Sataloff also recognizes the unique care that transgender individuals may seek to modify their voice to be more in line with their gender identity. He is enthusiastic about helping transgender patients achieve comfort and ease in their voice and speech and has published on the topic of individualized gender-affirming nonsurgical and surgical approaches to voice modification. Finally, Dr. Sataloff has clinical expertise in neurotology; a subspecialty of otolaryngology focused on disorders of hearing and hearing-related structures. His neurotology practice focuses on evaluation and treatment of hearing disorders, balance disorders, tinnitus, and facial nerve dysfunction. He also evaluates and treats swallowing and upper airway disorders. In addition to his clinical practice, Dr. Sataloff is a professional singer and singing teacher. He graduated from Haverford College with a degree in music theory and composition prior to pursuing a medical degree from Jefferson Medical College. After completing a residency in otolaryngology - head and neck surgery and a fellowship in otology, neurotology, and skull base surgery at University of Michigan, Dr. Sataloff returned to Philadelphia to study at Combs College of Music, where he received a Doctor of Musical Arts degree in voice performance.
