Spotlight on Men's Health

1 in 5 adults and 1 in 6 youth experience mental health concerns that impact their lives. For men, focusing on mental health should be part of general health and wellness — just as you would have regular physicals to take care of your body, you should take steps to take care of your mental health.
Oftentimes, men tend to feel like they don't need to seek help or express their emotions openly, but not doing so can lead to a disconnect with friends and family, substance misuse or even suicide attempts.
Some of the signs of mental health issues in men may include:
- Changes in sleep patterns or mood
- Headaches or memory loss
- Unusual or out-of-character behavior
- Withdrawal from usual routine
- Increased dependence on drugs or alcohol
- Sudden weight gain or loss
Dr. Marc Burock, a psychiatrist at Main Line Health, talks about the importance of reducing the stigma around mental health and promoting open communication which can help break down the barriers preventing men from seeking the help they may need.
