Main Line Health commits to a greener future by signing the Health Sector Climate Pledge

In a significant step toward environmental sustainability, Main Line Health has signed the Health Sector Climate Pledge, committing to reduce its greenhouse gas emissions and improve climate resilience.

This national initiative — launched by the White House and the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services in 2022 — unites healthcare organizations in tackling climate change. To date, approximately 950 health-related organizations have signed the pledge, including hospitals, health systems, health centers, suppliers and insurance companies.

“We are committed to improving the human condition through environmental stewardship because we recognize the profound impact climate change has on public health,” said Jack Lynch, FACHE, President and CEO, Main Line Health. “By signing on to the Health Sector Climate Pledge, we are making a bold commitment to reduce our environmental footprint and ensure a healthier future for our patients, community and the planet.”

Aligned with the Paris Climate agreement, the Health Sector Climate Pledge challenges healthcare organizations to achieve ambitious environmental goals. By signing the pledge, Main Line Health commits that it will:

  • Reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 50% by 2030
  • Achieve net-zero emissions by 2050
  • Develop climate resilience plans to safeguard facilities and communities from the growing impacts of climate change
  • Commit to conducting a Scope 3 (supply chain) emissions inventory

Main Line Health made environmental sustainability a key focus of its operations by serving as one of the goals of the System’s 2022–2026 Strategic Plan. The goals and targets include reducing energy and water consumption, establishing a sustainable waste management program, and committing to sustainable design and construction guidelines.

“We believe that a sustainable healthcare system is not only good for the environment but also essential for delivering high-quality care to our patients,” said JoAnn Magnatta, Senior Vice President, Planning, Design & Construction/Real Estate/Public Safety and Facility Management.
