Behind the Falls: Identifying Vestibular Dysfunction in High Risk Fallers

Strengthen your ability to identify and address vestibular dysfunction as a key contributor to falls in this engaging continuing education course designed for occupational therapists, occupational therapy assistants, physical therapists, and physical therapy assistants. Participants will review vestibular anatomy and physiology, explore common vestibular pathologies, and gain a deeper understanding of the relationship between vestibular impairments and fall risk. Special emphasis is placed on benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV), including risk factors, clinical presentation, and relevant history-taking considerations. Learners will also develop skills in differentiating vestibular causes of dizziness from non-vestibular conditions, utilizing standardized outcome measures in vestibular assessment, and recognizing when referral for comprehensive vestibular evaluation is warranted. Through practical application and patient case studies, clinicians will enhance their confidence in differential diagnosis and patient management to support safer outcomes. Two contact hours are available for occupational therapy and physical therapy.
