Laparoscopic Removal of Gynecological Tumors

What is laparoscopic removal of gynecological tumors?

Gynecological tumors are located in a female's reproductive organs, including the ovaries, uterus, cervix or other areas in your pelvic region. They may be benign (not cancerous) or they may be cancerous.

Gynecological tumors can be painful. If you have gynecological cancer, your tumors will need to be surgically removed as part of your treatment plan. If your gynecological tumors are benign, you may still need to have them removed. If they're not removed, they may cause chronic pelvic pain, infertility or abnormal vaginal bleeding. Ultimately, they may affect the way your reproductive organs function.

Main Line Health offers laparoscopic removal of gynecological tumors as a minimally invasive treatment option for tumors affecting the reproductive organs.

What to expect from laparoscopic removal of gynecological tumors

During this minimally invasive procedure, your surgeon will make a small incision in your navel to pass a laparoscopic camera through. This camera gives your surgeon a clear view of your reproductive organs and the tumors. Once the tumors are located, other small incisions are made so that precise surgical tools can be inserted and used to remove the tumors.

Laparoscopic surgery means you'll have less pain after surgery and can return to normal activities more quickly. There's also a lower risk of infection because of the smaller incisions used during laparoscopic surgery.
