January is a time of reflection, as well as a time to plan ahead. It’s a time for most people to think about how they will improve in the upcoming year. Common resolutions include saving more money, exercising more, quitting smoking, and spending more time with their relatives.
Some people say they will eat less, dine out less, and reduce their portion sizes. Others specifically say they will make healthier choices, or cook more. A few people research the cost of weight management programs, home exercise equipment, hiring a personal trainer, or having gastric bypass surgery.
However, in having these resolution discussions with friends, I haven’t specifically heard anyone say they will take care of their shoulder, consult with a surgeon about their knee pain, or learn how to improve their posture. Also missing were promises to find a way to reduce migraines, improve balance, or eliminate foot pain. But problems like these that affect so many of us can often be solved with the help of a physical therapist.
Through the use of different modalities, physical therapists can improve posture, flexibility, strength, balance, and overall quality of life. They can help those who experience numbness in their arms and legs as a result of a spine or nerve problem, and can help reduce headache or migraine pain. They can help people recover from traumas, surgeries, and strokes. If you’ve been dealing with aches and pains that are stopping you from doing what you enjoy, physical therapy could be the prescription you need.
As you are reflecting on your resolutions, think of how you feel. Are there aches and pains that are stopping you from doing what you want? Do you experience frequent headaches that require you to cancel plans you made in advance? Does your shoulder pain stop you from renewing your golf club membership? Does your back pain prevent you from talking dance lesions? Does your wrist pain stop you from scheduling your first guitar lesson? If so, talk to a physical therapist about your concerns. If you start treating your injury early in the year you can start doing what you enjoy sooner.
