Recovering from a stroke, spinal cord or brain injury, Parkinson’s disease, or other neurological illness is difficult. Daily activities that were once taken for granted—like walking—may require extensive therapy to regain. One of the ways Bryn Mawr Rehab Hospital is helping patients get back on their feet is with a cutting edge therapy tool called the Lokomat Pro.
The Lokomat Pro is a body weight supported robotic treadmill system that helps people learn to walk again by stimulating the central nervous system. This technology has been proven to reduce a patient’s recovery time in contrast to conventional therapy alone. With traditional rehab, a patient may get 50 steps in one 20 minute physical therapy session. With the Lokomat Pro, patients can get over 1000 steps in the same session.
The machine supports the body weight of the person while stimulating their legs to move in a walking motion along the treadmill. The physical therapist can alter how much of the person’s body weight the machine is taking on so as the person becomes stronger they can depend less on the Lokomat Pro but still have the sense of security since the robot won’t allow the patient to fall.
Offered at only a handful of medical centers in the nation, the Lokomat Pro is a perfect complement to all the services offered at Bryn Mawr Rehab Hospital.
