Customized and creative approaches developed by expert speech pathologists
Speech, language and swallowing therapy are often key components to treatment for patients who have had a neurological event like:
Or who have a neuromuscular disorder like Parkinson’s disease.
Speech therapy can include swallowing strategies and exercises, vocabulary exercises, articulation practice, attention and memory exercises, reading and writing for the improvement of a range of conditions, including:
- Issues with listening, reading, writing or speaking (aphasia)
- Issues with memory, organization or thinking skills (cognitive/linguistic)
- Pronunciation disorders (apraxia)
- Slurred speech (dysarthria)
- Swallowing disorders (dysphagia)
- Fluency disorders
- Voice disorders
After evaluating a patient’s speech, language, cognition and swallowing, our experienced and compassionate speech pathologists take a creative approach to developing a customized therapy plan for inpatient stay or outpatient speech therapy rehab. If needed, we can prescribe augmentative communication devices like simple communication boards and computerized communication devices.
Aphasia support group
This group is designed for people with aphasia to enhance communication and social skills. The group is facilitated by a speech-language pathologist who will assist with group interaction or when there is a breakdown in communication. The objective of the group is to provide a forum for participants to share the frustrations and challenges of aphasia as well as solutions and to develop social connections.
The aphasia support group meets the first and third Thursday of the month from 4:00-5:00 pm in the Patient Dining Room. For more information, call 484.596.5667 or email [email protected].
Outpatient speech therapy rehab
Speech therapy rehab is incorporated into many outpatient therapy plans, particularly patients who have had a stroke or neurologic condition. We customize our approach based on patient fluency, speech and swallowing. No matter the condition, every patient receives one-on-one therapy set at an appropriate pace.
Every patient’s progress depends on the condition and its severity. For many patients, speech therapy is just one aspect of rehabilitation and can be phased out as speaking or swallowing skills are strengthened.
