A holistic approach to integrated care

Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE) training, a form of interfaith theological education, takes place in hospitals, health systems, hospice centers and other clinical settings.

At Main Line Health, we teach spiritual care values as an essential part of our CPE Program. Main Line Health is an Association for Clinical Pastoral Education (ACPE) accredited CPE center. Our chaplains are person-centered and trained to listen empathetically. They help people find meaning in their experience regardless of their religion or beliefs.

By working with an interdisciplinary team of health care professionals, patients and visitors, students develop interpersonal and interprofessional skills.

Our Clinical Pastoral Education training program

Main Line Health offers fall, spring, summer and extended CPE units primarily at Paoli Hospital and Lankenau Medical Center. Other special clinical placements available throughout the Main Line Health System include Bryn Mawr Rehab and Mirmont Treatment Center.

The fall and spring units run 22 weeks at Lankenau Medical Center. Summer units run 15 weeks at both Paoli Hospital and Lankenau Medical Center. The extended unit runs 30 weeks at Paoli Hospital. Tuition for all units is $650 for a 400-hour CPE unit.

Main Line Health's mission is to provide a comprehensive range of safe, high-quality health services, complemented by related educational and research activities that meet healthcare needs and improve the quality of life in the communities we serve. Our Spiritual Health and Education Department is a part of that concept of holistic wellness. Our ACPE-accredited CPE units allow us to focus on quality training and spiritual care for the entire community.

The ACPE Core Curriculum exposes students to philosophies, methodologies, theories and research that form a foundation for learning. By increasing the student's familiarity with innovative works within spiritual care education, the curriculum provides a context for the critical thinking and integrative work they'll be required to demonstrate as they progress through the certification process.
