Practice Philosophy

After 43 years of practice, I really feel that the needs of my patients are best served by a physician who tries to follow the ideals of the old time family doctor. In this age of electronic medical records and constant change, it has become increasingly more difficult to practice this way.

It is necessary to allow the patient time to ventilate and explain his problem. Of course, we must interrupt politely from time to time to clarify important points of the history. It is then very important to examine the patient. I firmly believe in the laying on the hands. That principle springs from an ancient tradition that the doctors touch carried with the power to heal. Patients should receive clear explanations in everyday terms concerning lab and X-ray results. Implications of diagnosis and treatment should be simple and direct as well.

Family physicians have often been referred to as "gate keepers". I personally do not like this explanation. I do believe however that our patients should consult us first before going to a specialist. There are many problems we can handle without an expensive and time consumable work-up. Of course, we can direct our patients to the appropriate expert when necessary.

I personally believe that family doctors should advocate the basic principles of good health. I always try to recommend the proper diet, weight control and diet.
