There are some nail problems, fingernail or toenail, that require a biopsy to determine the exact nature of the problem and then a surgical or non surgical (chemical) procedure to repair or remove the nail(s). Either the entire nail (avulsion) or part of the nail (debridement) can be removed. This chemical procedure is almost always painless. Some of the conditions requiring this procedure include:
- Ingrown toenails and nail fungus
- Warts
- Tumors and cysts around or under nail beds
- Dark spots and streaks
- Psoriasis of the nail
- Traumatic nail injuries
- Prosthetic nails for people who have lost their finger or toe nails
