PAOLI, PA - Paoli Hospital’s Holloway Breast Health Center, the first center in Chester County dedicated solely to breast health, recently expanded its comprehensive services and advanced breast-imaging diagnostics, including digital mammography with computer-aided detection (CAD), to the Main Line Health Center in Collegeville and the Paoli Hospital Health Center in Exton.
“Expanding these capabilities is vital to serving Chester County’s growing population and to improving the early detection of breast cancer,” said Robert Fried, MD, Chief of Main Line Health Medical Staff and Director of the Holloway Breast Health Center. “We know that successful treatment of breast cancer begins with early diagnosis. While regular self and clinical examinations are important, imaging tools, such as digital mammography, can better detect a tumor or show changes in the breast long before it can be felt by a woman or physician during a physical exam.”
Paoli Hospital and the Health Centers in Collegeville and Exton are the only providers of digital mammography in Chester County. Digital mammography captures an electronic image of the breast and stores it directly in a computer, where it can be enhanced, magnified, or manipulated for further evaluation all while delivering less radiation and faster results than traditional film mammography.
“Used together with a computer-aided detection system, which uses computer software to highlight suspicious areas for the radiologist to review more closely, these tools may increase the cancer detection rate,” said John Schilling, MD, Director of Breast Imaging, Paoli Hospital.
Another feature of this system is the storing of digital mammograms in the hospital’s archive, which radiologists can use to compare a patient’s test from year to year, allowing them to better track changes in breast tissue.
As a complement to the latest in diagnostic technology, the Collegeville and Exton locations also offer the unique services of Paoli Hospital’s Breast Care Coordinator Laura Peters, RN. Ms. Peters addresses a woman’s physical needs, including pain and symptom management, and emotional and spiritual needs as well. As an experienced breast cancer nurse, she is a valuable resource for counseling, education, and support while guiding a patient through all stages of evaluation, treatment and follow-up care, including scheduling appointments with specialists.
