At Bryn Mawr Rehab Hospital, one of PA’s most comprehensive rehab
hospitals, we provide expert diagnosis and treatment of speech,
language, cognitive and swallowing disorders. Lead by Master’s level
licensed and certified speech pathologists, our
team works closely and collaboratively with patients, family and the
extended therapy team. This multi-disciplinary approach to
rehabilitation—at both the inpatient and outpatient rehab level—makes a
tremendous difference in a patient’s recovery.
Speech Therapy: Our Approach
For patients who have had a neurological event like spinal
cord injury, brain injury
or stroke, or who have a
neuromuscular disorder like Parkinson’s,
speech, language and swallowing therapy are often key components to
treatment. This therapy can include swallowing strategies and exercises,
vocabulary exercises, articulation practice, attention and memory
exercises, reading and writing. After evaluating a patient’s speech,
language, cognition and swallowing, our experienced and compassionate
speech pathologists take a creative approach in developing a
customized therapy plan for their inpatient stay or outpatient rehab. If
needed, we can prescribe augmentative communication devices like simple
communication boards and computerized communication devices.
Speech therapy treatment at Bryn Mawr Rehab Hospital covers a range of
issues with listening, reading,
writing or speaking (Aphasia)
issues with memory, organization or thinking skills
pronunciation disorders (Apraxia)
slurred speech (Dysarthria)
swallowing disorders (Dysphagia)
Speech therapy is incorporated into many patient therapy plans,
particularly patients who have had a stroke or neurologic condition. We
customize our approach based on our patients’ fluency, speech and
swallowing. No matter the condition, patients receive one-on-one therapy
set at an appropriate pace for them.
Every patient’s progress depends on their condition and its severity.
For many patients, speech therapy is just one aspect of their
rehabilitation and can be phased out as they strengthen their speaking
or swallowing skills.
For patients seeking outpatient speech therapy, we have a range of convenient
locations throughout Philadelphia’s western suburbs.
