James H. Gilfoil, MD

Independent Provider
Headshot of James H. Gilfoil, MD

My practice consists of psychotherapy and medication, if indicated. I see people who are struggling with various issues in their lives--be they anxiety, depression, or relationship problems-- and I attempt to help them resolve those issues so that they feel healthier and happier. Toward those ends, the patient and I establish some goals early on to help direct that process. Our work together is one of exploration and understanding to facilitate the necessary changes that need to take place.

About

James H. Gilfoil, MD

I was born and raised in rural Louisiana, and I attended LSU on a football scholarship. I attended Vanderbilt University School of Medicine, graduating in 1972. Then, I made the big step coming to the North for my residency training at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania. My wife and I fell in love with the Philadelphia area, and we decided to stay here after completion of my residency. For the first few years in practice, I had a part-time private practice and a part-time job at Hall Mercer at Pennsylvania Hospital. In 1980, I went to full time private practice at the Institute of Pennsylvania Hospital. In 1987, I joined the staff at Bryn Mawr Hospital, and I relocated my practice to Bryn Mawr, where it still remains. I'm a Distinguished Life Fellow in the American Psychiatric Association and the American Society for Adolescent Psychiatry. As noted in my personal philosophy, I treat people with Anxiety Disorders and Depressive Disorders, and also, those who are experiencing problems in their relationships with their spouse or partner, parents, or children.
