Erik D. Assarsson, MD

Erik D. Assarsson, MD, is a member of the Main Line Health medical staff in radiation oncology at Bryn Mawr Hospital and is board certified in that specialty. He serves as Division Chief of Radiation Oncology for the Main Line Health system. After earning a Bachelor of Science degree in neural science at Brown University in Rhode Island, Dr. Assarsson worked as an analyst at Brown's High Energy Physics Lab. He went on to develop the Andrology Center at the College of Physicians and Surgeons in New York City. He earned his medical degree at UMDNJ-Robert Wood Johnson Medical School where he completed an internship in internal medicine in 1984. Dr. Assarsson completed his residency in radiation oncology at UMDNJ-Cooper Hospital-University Medical Center in 1993. Since then, he has practiced as an attending physician in the radiation oncology department at both Bryn Mawr Hospital and Main Line Health Center in Newtown Square. Dr. Assarsson is actively involved with institutional and national clinical trials. He is a member of the American Society for Therapeutic Radiology and Oncology, the American Society of Clinical Oncology and the American College of Radiology. His clinical interests include cancers of the prostate, lung, breast, gastrointestinal tract and brain. He has received media coverage for the development of advanced and innovative treatment programs using respiratory gating, high-dose rate (HDR) brachytherapy, image-guided radiotherapy (IGRT), intensity-modulated radiation therapy (IMRT), stereotactic body radiation therapy (SBRT) and stereotactic radiosurgery (SRS). Both the Radiation Oncology Center at Bryn Mawr Hospital and Main Line Health Center in Newtown Square are accredited by the American College of Radiology as part of the hospital's comprehensive Cancer Center. Leading-edge technology and advanced treatment are offered at both convenient locations. Dr. Assarsson lives with his wife and two daughters in Newtown Square, Pennsylvania.
