Neurodiagnostic/Vascular Center

Path: Paoli Hospital < Centers & Programs <

The Neurodiagnostic/Vascular Center at Paoli Hospital performs a wide variety of non-invasive, diagnostic tests of the brain, nervous system and circulatory system. Our state-of-the-art neurodiagnostic laboratory features state-of-the-art digital equipment that allows us to share information with referring physicians and other specialists at Main Line Health hospitals.

Electroencephalography (EEGs)
Electroenceophalography (or EEG) is an electrical study of brain waves and is a non-invasive test that is frequently used to evaluate brain function or disorders. An EEG may be done for the following reasons: diagnose epilepsy, diagnose brain injury or assess conditions and diseases that affect the brain, such as coma, mental retardation, encephalitis, cognitive impairment, brain tumors, or certain psychological disorders.

When data is required over a longer period of time, we offer 24, 48 and 72-hour Ambulatory EEG Monitoring for patients of all ages. These portable devices allow patients to carry on with their normal routines while data is recorded and analyzed. Ambulatory EEG is especially effective in the evaluation of epilepsy or seizure disorders, including nocturnal seizures.  Ambulatory EEG is also a useful diagnostic tool when investigating patients with:

  • Syncope
  • Transient global amnesia
  • Dizziness
  • Unidentified episodes of confusion or altered state.

Extended Video Monitoring
Extended Video Monitoring is used with some patients having questionable seizures and unusual neurological symptoms. In this process, patients undergo a prolonged EEG (4 -5 hours) with video monitoring.

Other Testing Procedures include:
  • Nerve Conduction Studies (NCSs)
  • Electromyography (EMG, electrical study of the nerves and muscles) in their private
  • Pulse Volume Recording (arterial flow study)
  • Carotid Doppler Ultrasonography
  • Transcranial Doppler
