The successful candidate will join a highly energetic and progressive
team of cardiac surgical providers focused on the utilization of
minimally invasive approaches for the treatment and management of
patients with advanced heart disease – coronary and valvular. With
programs in robotic revascularization, mitral repair, aortic disease
management, and transcatheter aortic valve replacement, the Lankenau
Medical Center is one of the most advanced cardiovascular programs in
the Philadelphia region and is now home to the Lankenau Heart Institute.
In this key role, the PA / NP will be an integral member of the patient
care delivery team central to the unit-based multi-disciplinary team in
leading quality and evidence-based care initiatives that will result in
achieving optimal patient outcomes and improved patient satisfaction.
The CRNP/PA extends and expands the role of physicians, enhances
continuity of quality patient care and amplifies communication among all
professional care givers, the patient and his/her family members.
The PA / NP will have primary responsibility for the continuum of care
for cardiac surgical patients. Other responsibilities would include:
oversight of surgical telemetry patients and bedside rounds. Responsible
for cardiac surgery admission H&P, consultations, and computer
The PA / NP must be able to function in an autonomous critical care
environment and perform invasive procedures such as central line,
arterial line, and chest tube and IABP insertion and removal. General
postoperative care would also include ventilator support / management,
adjustments in medication infusions (e.g. inotropes, anti-arrhythmics,
insulin, heparin, etc.) and recognition of problems related to open
heart surgery patients (e.g. low cardiac output). Attending level
supervision is constantly available so that the PA / NP has a resource
for guidance and collaboration of ideas for important decision-making.
Physician Assistant Requirements: Graduate of an accredited Physician
Assistant program; Must be certified or eligible for certification by
the NCCPA and Pennsylvania State Board of Medical Education and
Nurse Practitioner Requirements: Graduate of an approved Nurse
Practitioner program, licensed by the Pennsylvania State Board of Nurse
Examiners as a Certified Registered Nurse Practitioner (CRNP). CRNP
All candidates must have BLS certification, ACLS certification, as well
as strong written and verbal skills of the English language. Prefer a
minimum of one year experience cardiothoracic surgical experience.
