Role of TAVR Team Physicians
Cardiac surgeons determine
whether patients are at too high
risk for surgical valve
replacement and should be
considered for TAVR. They also
provide surgical expertise
during TAVR procedures to ensure
optimal outcomes.
Interventional
cardiologists
(specialists in catheter-based
heart procedures) work with
cardiac surgeons to evaluate
patients for TAVR. They take the
lead in performing TAVR
procedures, working closely with
cardiac surgeons and other TAVR
team members.
Cardiac
anesthesiologists
ensure safe delivery of
anesthesia before and during
TAVR procedures, monitor
patients during TAVR procedures,
and oversee post-procedure care.
Echocardiologists
(specially trained cardiologists) use
ultrasound technology to evaluate the
function of the heart, including valve
function and blood flow.

The multidisciplinary Valve Clinic team at Lankenau Medical Center has a
long history of collaborative work in the treatment of heart vessel and
valve disease. Two of the physician leaders of the team—Dr. Goldman and
Dr. Coady—have worked together for more than 20 years. Lankenau’s
expertise in surgical and catheter-based treatment of heart disease and
seasoned heart team were important factors in being selected to offer
transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR) therapy.
Meet Our Valve Clinic Team
At the core of our Valve Clinic team are specialists in cardiac surgery,
interventional cardiology, and echocardiography as well as a dedicated
nurse practitioner (Heart Valve Coordinator) who
helps patients navigate the care process from start to finish.

Other Essential Team Members
Why It Takes a Team
To effectively evaluate patients for TAVR and successfully perform the
procedure requires a team of specialists working together. This
multidisciplinary team approach is essential, as each specialist brings
expertise that is integral to the total care process.
Our Valve Clinic team is committed to a patient-centered collaborative
approach to care—from initial consultation through evaluation,
treatment, and follow-up. We work closely with each other and with
patients, families, and referring physicians to develop and implement a
treatment plan that best fits the needs of each patient and that ensures
the best-possible outcomes.
