The Lankenau Institute for Medical Research
The Center for Clinical Cancer Research (CCCR) promotes and supports all cancer research across Main Line Health (MLH). The CCCR, led by Director Paul Gilman, MD, Chief, Division of Hematology/Oncology, LMC, oversees both NCI and non-NCI sponsored clinical and non-clinical trials within LIMR. These include novel trials of experimental therapeutics in oncology, drug development in partnership with pharmaceutical companies, and investigator-initiated trials, which relate to methods, tests and drugs developed here at LIMR. George Prendergast, PhD, Professor, President and CEO of LIMR, is a co-director with Dr. Gilman of the LIMR Program in Cancer Research. The synergy between LIMR’s laboratory programs and the clinical research activities serves as a translational conduit for the movement of laboratory findings into clinical investigations.
Dr. Gilman is also the principal investigator of the Main Line Health Community Clinical Oncology Program (CCOP), a cancer clinical trials program sponsored by the National Cancer Institute (NCI). The MLH CCOP, one of only 47 in the United States, consists of cancer treatment, control, and prevention trials. The many advantages of the NCI-sponsored consortium between Lankenau Medical Center, Bryn Mawr Hospital, and Paoli Hospital to the MLH community include having access to state-of-the-art clinical trials and new cancer treatments before they become available to the general public, and allowing patients to be more active in their healthcare. Community education is a critical component of the CCOP, which aims to improve patient awareness, services, and clinical outcomes to the nearly one million people residing in Main Line Health’s service area.
