Although not part of the digestive tract, the pancreas and biliary
system (gallbladder and bile ducts) play important roles in digestion.
The pancreas, which is located behind the stomach, secretes juices that
help digest carbohydrates, fats, and proteins. The biliary system stores
and transports bile, a digestive fluid that helps to break down fats and
rid the body of waste.
Pancreatic and biliary diseases can be complex problems to diagnose and
treat. Until recently, the pancreas and biliary system could not be
closely examined using endoscopic techniques. However, advances in
diagnostic and therapeutic endoscopy have made it possible to offer more
precise diagnosis and minimally invasive treatment options for these
potentially serious and often painful disorders.
