Colorectal Cancer and IBD
People with IBD are at increased
risk for developing colorectal
cancer. Specific risk factors
include having:
-
IBD for 8 years or
longer
-
Extensive colon
involvement
-
Extensive inflammation
of the colon
-
Bile duct inflammation
-
Polyps or precancerous
changes in the colon or
rectum
-
Colorectal cancer in a
family member
Current guidelines recommend
that people with IBD undergo
earlier and more frequent
screening for colorectal cancer
than people who do not have IBD.

Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is characterized by chronic intestinal
inflammation that is triggered by abnormal immune response. The two main
forms of IBD are:
Inflammation usually is a normal process that occurs when the immune
system is fighting to protect the body. In IBD, the immune system
mistakenly attacks the digestive tract, producing harmful inflammation.
It is unclear what triggers the attack, but the cause of IBD is thought
to involve genetic, environmental, and immune system factors.
IBD usually requires lifelong treatment with medications and, at times,
surgery. Fortunately, advances in medical therapy are making it
increasingly possible to achieve and maintain disease remission (control
of inflammation and absence of symptoms). The earlier IBD is diagnosed
and brought under control, the more likely it is to avoid damage to the
digestive tract.
