Cancers of the digestive system include cancers that develop in the
esophagus, stomach, small intestine, colon, rectum, pancreas, liver, or
bile ducts. Collectively, these cancers cause many deaths. In fact, only
lung cancer causes more deaths than cancers that develop within the
digestive system.
Some digestive cancers can be prevented through screening, detection of
precancerous conditions, and removal of premalignant tissues before they
form into cancer. However, not all cancers begin this way. In these
situations, early detection—while the cancer is still small and has not
spread—offers the best chance of curative treatment.
