Blankets 4 Bryn
Mawr – Girls Just Wanna Help Kids
|
When Shipley School fifth graders Perry Maner and Emma Durham needed to
choose a community service project for school, they had an idea. “Both
of us have spent time in Bryn Mawr Hospital when we were sick,” Perry
explains. “It’s not fun and you miss your own bed at home, so we decided
our project should help other kids who are sick in the hospital.”
Enter Perry’s mom, Hilary Maner, immediate past president of the
hospital’s Women’s Board.
A couple of emails from Hilary to contacts at Bryn Mawr Hospital put
Perry and Emma in touch with Kelly Ann Zazyczny, R.N., nurse manager of
the Pediatric Unit. Kelly Ann suggested that the girls make small fleece
blankets for kids to cuddle and take home. Pleased with the idea, the
girls set to work during their Winter break, meeting first with Kelly
Ann for a hands-on lesson in crafting snuggly “binkies” from brightly
colored and patterned squares of fleece. How did the project turn out?
“We’re proud to say we delivered 25 blankets to the hospital on January
31,” reports Perry. Adds Kelly Ann, “We are deeply grateful to Perry and
Emma and congratulate them for their wonderful service project. I can’t
thank them enough for the charming blankets they created to bring a bit
of comfort to our pediatric patients.”
