Christmas arrived early at Bryn Mawr Hospital in 2011. On Friday,
December 9, the Board of Directors of the Devon Horse Show and Country
Fair presented its annual contribution – the largest ever - to Bryn Mawr
Hospital. The majority of the gift, totaling $402,000, will be used to
finance two new holding bays in the BMH cardiac catheterization lab.
“We are honored that the Devon Horse Show has recognized the
cardiac cath lab this year,” said Antonis Pratsos, MD, the lab’s
director, in his thank-you remarks. “We will use this donation to expand
our holding area bays for two more patients in order to accommodate
increased patient volume. We are now using radial (wrist) access for
more than half of our patients undergoing cardiac catheterization for
elective and emergent stent procedures. This allows rapid patient
ambulation and discharge, increased patient comfort and minimized risk
of bleeding. The gift will also be used to create a radial lounge with
recliner chairs instead of stretchers. We are truly grateful to Devon
for providing the resources for this important project.”

On January 18, Devon Horse Show and Country Fair Executive Committee
members Debbie Martin, Candace Guinan, Sandra Shinners and Mimi Killian
were given a tour of the Comprehensive Breast Center to see renovations
made possible by Devon’s 2010 gift to the hospital. On hand to host
these Very Important Patrons were Marianne Scaperroto, Manager of
Outpatient Radiology; Lynn Quinn, RN, Manager of Radiation Oncology; and
Julie Hyland, Associate Director of Development of the Bryn Mawr
Hospital Foundation.
Thanks to Devon, the Breast Center has opened 5 additional changing
rooms for a total of 10 to more comfortably accommodate increased
patient volume. To make way for the new rooms, administrative offices
and conference/consultation rooms were relocated to space formerly
occupied by Susquehanna Bank. The balance of Devon’s 2010 donation
funded the purchase of new surgical equipment, a Kubtex x-ray cabinet,
and the production of patient education literature and video created
especially for breast cancer patients and their families.
Debbie Martin summed up Devon’s visit in an email to Team BMH: “I
cannot begin to tell you how impressed all of us were going "behind
the scenes" in the Comprehensive Breast Center. The detail, the
time, and the compassion that goes into reading each and every woman's
images are incredible. We all appreciate the kindness that is shown
by staff we have come to know over the years, but the work that goes on
in the reading rooms and other areas by people we have never met is
just so wonderful. We look forward to the development of the video
and our continued partnership. Thank you for taking such good care of us
all, and using the expansion to help the community - that is what it is
all about!”
