Bryn Mawr Hospital and volunteers from the Devon Horse Show and Country
Fair celebrated an annual rite of spring on Thursday, April 28th in the
hospital cafeteria - Devon Derby Day! Festive decor, music, balloons,
popcorn, Devon fudge and lemon sticks – a Devon favorite – generated
lots of excitement for lunchtime staff and visitors. Devon Derby
volunteers did a brisk business selling chances on a 2011 Range Rover
and other fabulous prizes. Winners will be drawn at the Horse Show on
Saturday, June 4. There was no shortage of takers for a special raffle
of VIP Phillies tickets. The lucky winner was Rosemary Wiggins of the
Cancer Clinical Trials department.
Devon Day is a key opportunity for hospital employees to sign up to
volunteer at the Horse Show, which runs from Thursday, May 26 through
Sunday, June 5. Those who missed Devon Day but would like to join Team
BMH can volunteer online at http://www.thedevonhorseshow.org/country-fair-volunteers.php.
The Devon Horse Show and Country Fair is the single largest contributor
to Bryn Mawr Hospital. Since it began in 1919, Devon has raised nearly
$14,000,000. Recent donations funded such projects as the
Comprehensive Breast Center, the expansion of the Emergency Department,
high tech surgical and patient monitoring equipment, and a new infant
anti-abduction system for the Labor and Delivery, Nursery and Neonatal
Intensive Care units. The most recent donation, in December of 2010, was
$370,000, the largest to date. This generous gift furthered the
Devon Horse Show and Country Fair's commitment to the Comprehensive
Breast Center by funding the expansion of the patient area, new imaging
equipment and the development of an information package for newly
diagnosed patients.
About the Devon Horse Show
In 1896, the Devon Horse Show started as a one-day equestrian event.
Today, more than a century later, it has become the oldest and largest
outdoor multi-breed competition in the United States. It is
internationally recognized, USEF-A rated, and one of the most exciting
events to happen in our area. While it draws top competitors from around
the world, the Devon continues to reflect the local traditions and
lifestyles of the Philadelphia Main Line. Learn
