Lankenau has begun its conversion of all patient rooms from semi-private
to private, utilizing evidence-based design—features that have been
shown to enhance patient safety and comfort and promote healthy
outcomes. By the summer of 2013, all of our patient rooms will be single
occupancy, with features such as:
-
Private bathrooms with step-in showers
-
Large windows with natural light
-
Individual air controls
-
Soothing colors and decor for a more relaxing
environment
-
Furnished space for family members
-
Flat-screen televisions
-
Hotel-style room service
Patient care units will utilize advances in technology and architectural
design to maximize communication, workflow efficiency, infection control
and patient safety:
-
Cart at every bedside for in-room charting; secure
computer access in hallways for rounding physicians and
staff; and individual medication box outside each
patient room to reduce risk of errors and increase
efficiency
-
Sinks and instrumentation in each room, and Avagard
disinfectant and lab coat hangers outside each room, to
reduce risk for infection
-
Identical room orientation and layout to improve
functionality and reduce the chance of errors
-
Decentralized work pods with clear sight lines for
observation, to enable nurses to work closer to their
patients and reduce travel to main nurses' station
-
Improved nurse call system and rubber flooring to reduce
noise in unit for greater patient comfort
-
No-touch access system at unit entrances to reduce risk
of infection
-
Alcoves for equipment to reduce the risk of hallway
accidents and ease patient transport
-
Central Monitoring Room that enables specially-trained
technicians to observe all telemetry beds throughout the
hospital. Telemetry is technology that enables 24/7
remote monitoring of a patient's heart rhythm; in
addition to in-room and on-unit observation, this
ensures the highest level of patient safety and best
outcomes
