Helene Berman (East Meadow, New York)
majored in art at Hunter College and
attended the Art Students League.
She exhibited in many shows on Long
Island including the Nassau County
Museum of Art, the Chelsea Center, the
Chung Chen Gallery, the Women’s Center
in Manhasset and the New York Institute
of Technology with a one-woman show at
the Commack Jewish Center. As a member
of NuVisions for Disabled Artists,
she participated in many
Philadelphia-area shows. Berman lost her
leg to cancer 30 years ago so she paints
on an upright canvas from a wheelchair.
Her works in oils, collage and gold
leaf, have become calmer and more
abstract as she has grown older. Berman
says painting provides a sense of calm
and peace in times of adversity.
