2009 Award Winner: Fiber Arts and Crafts, Second prize
Marcia Springston Dillon (Forest Hill,
West Virginia) graduated magna cum laude
from University of Akron with degrees in
special education and social psychology.
Blind since childhood, Springston
discovered clay while in elementary
school. She loved to sculpt and tried
throwing pots on the wheel. After
college, she was a tour guide for a
museum that housed potters and
glassblowers. Their passion was
contagious and she soon began taking
pottery classes and workshops wherever
she could. She uses texture rather than
color to decorate her work. Springston
has been producing thrown functional
stoneware for over 20 years and is
beginning to experiment with sculptural
slab built forms.
