Bryn Mawr Rehab Hospital is dedicated to serving individuals whose lives can be enhanced through physical and cognitive rehabilitation. Celebrating 40 years as a leader in the field of physical medicine and rehabilitation, Bryn Mawr Rehab Hospital is located in Malvern, PA, and was established as the country division of Rush Hospital in 1902. At that time, our primary work was caring for patients with tuberculosis. Through the years our emphasis changed and in 1970 Bryn Mawr Rehab Hospital became a center for rehabilitative medicine, pioneering programs for individuals who experience the effects of brain injury, stroke, orthopedic injuries, spinal cord and neurological disorders.

Today, Bryn Mawr Rehab Hospital is the largest, most comprehensive acute rehabilitation hospital in the Mid-Atlantic region. We provide a continuum of services through our inpatient, outpatient and day treatment programs. 

Inpatient Rehabilitation Programs

With 148-beds, our hospital boasts dedicated rehabilitation programs for stroke, brain injury, spinal cord injury, amputee, orthopedic, and medical rehabilitation. Each of our programs is CARF (Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities) certified and accredited by The Joint Commission (TJC).

Our patient care philosophy ensures that the members of the healthcare team – physicians, nurses, therapists and case managers – work together to ensure patients receive the highest quality care and rehabilitation services. Our therapists are integral members of the patient care team and work closely with nurses and physicians to develop a therapy plan to help patients reach their greatest potential and the highest level of independence possible.

Outpatient Rehabilitation Programs

In addition to providing comprehensive inpatient therapy services, Bryn Mawr Rehab Hospital offers a full complement of outpatient therapy services. Our outpatient programs include traditional services in our main therapy gym, as well as a full-day program in our Day Treatment setting that includes a focus on community re-entry. Our outpatient therapy services also include specialized work injury and pain management programs in our BMR Works setting, along with outpatient services provided at nine satellite locations that are part of the Bryn Mawr Rehab Outpatient Network.

Among the specialized outpatient therapy services that we offer are Post Concussion/Mild Traumatic Brain Injury, Driver Rehabilitation, Assistive Technology, Vestibular Disorders, Parkinson’s disease, Aquatic Therapy and Horticulture Therapy. (Pain Management, Total joint replacement Orthopedic Day program, Lymphedema therapy, Pelvic pain and incontinence therapy, Adolescent and Adult sport injury prevention and rehabilitation, and Hand Therapy)

How does providing therapy in an acute rehabilitation hospital differ from other settings?

An acute rehabilitation hospital provides medical, nursing and therapy services to patients with significant diagnostic complexities. In this environment, our therapy staff serves as an integral part of the patient care team. Our hospital has dedicated, specialized programs for brain injury, stroke, spinal cord disorders and injuries, amputee, medical rehabilitation and orthopedic rehabilitation and our therapists provide a minimum of three hours of therapy each day to our patients. With our patient care and rehabilitation model, our staff is afforded the opportunity to develop unique skill sets. The ultimate goal of the entire team is to return the patient to their home.

What are the advantages of working in this setting?

Our hospital emphasizes a team approach to patient care and therapists are an integral part of the team that establishes a plan of care and therapy treatment plan for significantly complex patients. In this environment, our therapists develop strong patient relationships and strong staff relationships as they provide care and treatment for a variety of patient diagnoses in various specialized programs and services.

What skills will I be using in this setting?

Due to the complexities of our patient population and as a result of providing a full continuum of care, therapists can utilize all of their training and develop new skill sets, such as casting, splinting, gait training use of body weight supported ambulation, refinement of neuro handling techniques, and seating and positioning. Therapists also can utilize and/or develop new skills and techniques in aquatic therapy, hippotherapy and horticultural therapy in a unique environment to facilitate positive patient outcomes.

What is it like to work in an acute rehabilitation hospital? 

Helping patients attain the highest level of independence possible is the ultimate goal of our patient care team. Therapists are an active member of the multi-disciplinary team. Therapists help to establish goals for each patient and also help establish discharge plans. Because of our unique environment with a patient population that is highly complex, therapists can reach beyond their normal skill sets to establish techniques and routines that help patient reach their highest level of independence.

Will I be part of a team and work with other therapists?

Our patients are treated by a multi-disciplinary care team that includes physical, occupational and speech language pathology clinicians, as well as recreational therapists, horticulture therapists, neurologists, psychologists, physical medicine and rehabilitation physicians, nurses and case managers. Weekly team meetings facilitate the interdisciplinary approach to patient care, with the therapist providing details on successful therapy strategies. In addition, as a Main Line Health employee, you are part of a large network of therapists across the Main Line Health organization, which employs over 400 therapists and offers tremendous opportunity for growth and learning.

Is there training provided?

Our therapists take part in a clinical mentoring program whereby a specified clinical mentor meets weekly with you for the first 6 months of your employment. This unique program provides added value to our patients and our therapists and enhances or team approach to rehabilitation. In addition each employee receives individualized orientation when hired based on clinical experience, including opportunities to attend educational events offered at the Main Line Health system level. Bryn Mawr Rehab Hospital also offers extensive inservice training and continuing education opportunities.
