2008 Award Winner: Watercolor, First prize / Third prize
Mimi Barclay Johnson (Bryn Mawr, Pennsylvania)
has been an art and music lover since childhood.
Her love for painting began after winning a set
design contest with The Savoy Company. Johnson
painted openly and freely with oils, pastels and
watercolors that she used to illustrate
children’s books. A car accident resulted in the
loss of the use of her left hand, leaving her
unable to work. Visual problems and a lack of
depth perception were discovered after the
strength in her hand slowly returned. A second
car accident created problems that made it
impossible for her to paint outdoors, so she now
paints from memory. The sheer joy this former
Bryn Mawr Rehab Hospital patient derives from
her art and the desire to continue sharing
beauty with others drives her to keep trying.
