Frequently
Asked Questions
How does providing therapy in a retirement community differ from other
settings?
The premier retirement communities offer a diverse patient population.
Services are provided not only to the independent outpatients in the
community, but also to the assisted living and skilled nursing
residents. As a clinician, you can work in one job setting and practice
all of your skills.
What are the advantages of working in this setting?
Each of our facilities emphasize a team approach to patient care.
Therapists experience autonomy and a flexible schedule. Strong patient
relationships develop with the therapy staff, as you provide treatment
to the resident through the continuum of care.
What skills will I be using in this setting?
Due to the various levels of patient care from outpatient to inpatient,
therapists can utilize all of their training. Clinicians do not feel
stagnant in our retirement communities, as they successfully develop
treatment plans that facilitate positive patient outcomes.
Is it depressing to work with the aging population in a retirement
community?
Maintaining quality of life is the ultimate goal in the retirement
community. Our therapists’ pro-active approach to patient care assists
in the prevention of resident decline. It is truly a rewarding setting
where patients are discharged home routinely and receive treatment by
the same therapists on an outpatient basis. Therapists are uplifted to
see the positive results from therapy intervention.
Will I be part of a team and work with other therapists?
Each retirement community provides physical, occupational, and speech
language pathology clinicians. A team approach is stressed not only in
the rehab department, but also with nursing, dietary, admissions and
social services. Weekly team meetings facilitate an interdisciplinary
approach to patient care. In addition, as a Main Line Health employee,
you are part of a large network of therapists across the Main Line
Health organization. Main Line Health employs over 400 therapists,
providing you lots of opportunity for growth and learning.
Is there training provided?
Each employee is trained one on one by a clinician at the start of
employment. Orientation is individualized according to the new hire’s
clinical experience and training continues until he/she is independent
in the retirement setting. This includes opportunities to attend any
educational events that are offered in the Main Line Health system that
would expand the employee’s knowledge base. Observation/clinical
training at Main Line Health locations including hospital grand rounds
and surgical observation are available to those employees that are
interested and would benefit from this education.
Is this setting right for me?
If you are a compassionate and caring clinician that enjoys the
geriatric population, you will love this environment. If you are seeking
a work place where you can utilize all of your skills, desire
flexibility with your schedule, and want to be valued as a professional,
this setting is your perfect destination.
